Handbook of Sports Studies

Edited by:

August 2000 | 570 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd
Now available in paperback, this vital handbook marks the development of sports studies as a major new discipline within the social sciences. Edited by the leading sociologist of sport, Eric Dunning, and Jay Coakley, author of the best selling textbook on sport in the USA, it both reflects and richly endorses this new found status.

Key aspects of the Handbook include: an inventory of the principal achievements in the field; a guide to the chief conflicts and difficulties in the theory and research process; a rallying point for researchers who are established or new to the field, which sets the agenda for future developments; a resource book for teachers who wish to establish new curricula and develop courses and programmes in the area of sports studies.

With an international and inter-disciplinary team of contributors the Handbook of Sports Studies is comprehensive in scope, relevant in content and far-reaching in its discussion of future prospect.

`This is a book that lacks nothing. It is not only about sport, but the contexts, in which it surfaces, the cultures that encircle it, the forces that unify it and those that tear it apart. Its exemplary organisation provides a framework in which Coakley and Dunning are able to review every known theory, topic and problem - from poststructuralism through gender to violence - relevant to the scholarly analysis of sport. A strong international section collects research findings from around the world. The scope of the Handbook is immense and its detail lavish; yet, its text is economical - almost 700 pages and not a wasted sentence. In short, a champion without challengers' - Ellis Cashmore Professor of Culture, Media and Sport, Staffordshire University, and author of Making Sense of Sports

`This handbook contains useful reviews of major theoretical frameworks and research topics in sports studies - especially sport sociology - written by a star-studded array of internationally recognized experts. The scope and depth of this volume demonstrates the intellectual maturity of this area. Each chapter provides an informative historical context and an organized conceptual framework for making sense of the relevant scholarly literature. The book will be particularly useful to graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and college and university faculty who are seeking to gain rapid, informed access to the literature' - Janet C Harris, California State University

This is a highly recommended text that has a comprehensive overview of many key factors within sport and society. Many of the studies are inciteful and provide a detailed perspective of the historical factors that have impacted upon modern day sport as we know it.

A detailed look at all aspects of sport which covers a wide range of topics. A bit too high end for Level 3 students but there are some concepts / chapters included which are relevant. This would be a very good book for Foundation Degree as well as other Level 4 and Level 5 students.

A good book for introducing students to the topic of sport and society, with an enormously broad range of topics considered. We'll be making particular use of the chapters on globalisation, political economy and the media in sport.
