The Nurse Mentor's Companion

November 2014 | 184 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd

This is a new highly practical guide to doing mentoring in practice. It explains how to support student nurses from the day that they arrive on placement in six straightforward, concise and clear chapters.

The book is packed full of resources and learning features, including:

  •         Action plans for managing your student
  •         Checklists of resources you will need
  •         Tips for best practice
  •         Case studies covering all fields of nursing
  •         Reflective questions which challenge you to question your assumptions.

Chapters are tied closely to the NMC standards, and cover essential topics including assessment, the role of the sign-off mentor and team-working.

A useful companion book that will complement the facilitation of mentorship teaching in and beyond the classroom.

The style used ensures that the student mentor engages with current language associated with mentorship from the perspective of the NMC in a way that is applicable to the practice of mentoring within the clinical environment

The book is an easy reference book for mentors mentoring pre registration student nurses. It is easy to follow and covers most of the basics of good mentoring. The activities and cse scenarios provoke lots of thought and reflection. The contents lacks detail in some areas of mentoring e.g how patients can contribute to student nurse assessment; grading of student practice, and so for more experienced mentors it may seem a little too basic.
