Health and Well-Being Across the Life Course

  • Mary Larkin - De Montfort University, UK, Open University, UK

January 2013 | 208 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd
Using a life course approach, the main chapters in this truly original and enlightening text focus on health and well-being during each of our life stages. A wide range of contemporary literature from disciplines such as public health, sociology, epidemiology and social policy are drawn upon to examine key health and well-being issues in these stages, and to illustrate how health effects can accumulate across the life course. Interactive activities based on the text and on extracts from primary sources are used to encourage critical reflection and debate.

Mary Larkin's book will be essential reading for students on the many courses that need an understanding of health and well-being across all age groups. It will also be an invaluable resource for those in the health and social care sector as well as practitioners working in the field.

An excellent multi-discipline approach to the subject taken for each life-course stage. The book is set out in a very accessible format for under graduates with lots of side headings and comment boxes and advice for further study. The chapter overviews provide a quick reference point for students. Each chapter can be used to guide students to areas for individual study, provide homework tasks and make links between the various factors impacting on health and illness across and between different stages of the life-course. Definitely recommended reading for my students.

Not as useful as first thought for Sports courses, though will supplement evidence for units on health and wellbeing. More suited to Health and Social Care.
Nice touch with the discussion boxes, definite use for this in lessons for deeper learning and assessment of understanding

A very well structured text providing a sound theoretical framework in which to consider occupation and participation in relation to health and well being across the life span. The discussion points provide a good basis for workshops and are useful to promote further discussion of the wider issues each chapter raises.
