Integrating 12-Steps and Psychotherapy
Helping Clients Find Sobriety and Recovery

July 2013 | 240 pages | SAGE Publications, Inc
This book is intended to helpástudents and clients integrate 12-step treatment with psychotherapy. The book is the first to do so in a systematic fashion. It covers issues of pre-treatment and then goes into each step and it's purpose. The book discusses obstacles to treatment and how to incorporate psychotherapy with 12-step treatment. It also covers relapse prevention, which is a big component of any treatment program. This book will help bridge the often competing views of psychotherapy and 12-step treatment. It is the first book of its kind to bring the two approaches together.

Despite the American focus of this book, I will recommend this to my students, who are often very confused about how 12-step works and how it is possible to integrate our clients' twelve-step work into our counselling relationship.

I hope this will prove a useful book for helping our Masters level students start to understand how 12 step recovery can fit with their NHS/other agency treatment provision.

The book seems well laid out and is written in an accessible way. There are a few key questions at the end of each chapter to help the reader reflect on & embed the content discussed.

This publication is helpful for students to appreciate how to develop and integrate the 12 step philosophy into their counselling work.

It's written in a very accessable way, and offers interesting points on how to support clients in recovery.
