This text will enable students to gain beginning proficiency as a family therapist along with understanding the impact of a client’s race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender issues, age, socioeconomic status, disability, and differences from the “traditional” family on family assessment and intervention.
The book has six goals, as follows:
- acquaint students with the theoretical underpinnings of various approaches to assessing and intervening with families
- assist students in understanding the similarities, differences and strategies of change among the major models of family therapy
- introduce the student to the current available research on the effectiveness of different approaches to family intervention - help students assess family functioning from a life cycle perspective and make a valid plan, taking into account client’s race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender issues, age, socioeconomic status, disability, and differences from the “traditional” family
- help students develop techniques and strategies related to stages of the intervention in family therapy
- enable the student to critique the appropriateness of the theoretical models and its intervention techniques according to family developmental factors as well as the particular needs of the family.
excellent text. It includes a very reasonable and "deep" approach to multiculturalism in family therapy.
This is a helpful book for those interested in family therapy as it considers the links between family therapy and a range of theoretical concepts as well as the development of family therapy as an intervention.
This book will assist any social work practitioner or health professional interested in family work per se.
The history of family therapy provides a most interesting read and the chapter on dealing with crisis and trauma very insightful.
A really accessible introductory text on family therapy which offers a comprehensive of the key theories and concepts Well-structured and laid out with helpful case examples.
Very good text for graduate class. Comprehensive for those students who are looking to understand the vocabulary, models and the needs of families and children in particular. This is a good introductory course text. As an instructor, I enjoy having discussion questions in the book to refer to in class and to assign for extra credit assignment. I am using a companion book because the focus of this class is counseling addictive families.

Having thought two classes the Family Systemic Counselling Theroy and Skills module this year I would recommend that this book be added to the core text book list in our bibliography for this module. This book covers most of the topics in the narratives for this module and it would be of great benifit to our students.
An excellently written and structured book, giving the reader an excellent overview of all aspects of Family Therapy.
