Skills in Solution Focused Brief Counselling and Psychotherapy

  • Paul Hanton - Independent practitioner, consultant and trainer

April 2011 | 152 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd
In recent years solution focused brief therapy (SFBT) has emerged as the therapy of choice for many health and social care professionals. Its simplicity and brevity means it is effective, economical and adaptable across many settings, and it also has a strong evidence base.

As part of the bestselling SAGE Skills in Counselling & Psychotherapy series, this book is one of the first to focus specifically on SFBT skills and practice. Aimed at those new to the approach and as a refresher to those that have started using SFBT, it covers the key techniques and interventions. Structured step-by-step along the lines of an actual therapy session, the book can be dipped into or read cover-to-cover. It covers:

- Assumptions, expectations and ways of working

- The role of the Solution Focused Brief Therapist

- The Miracle Question, scaling, tasks

- Ending sessions and closures.

Supported by; case studies, therapeutic dialogue, hints and tips, exercises and points for reflection, the book is an ideal companion for any counselling, health or social care trainee who plans to practice Solution Focused Brief Therapy in today's time-constrained settings. It will also be a valuable guide for those qualified in the caring professions and wishing to refresh the way that they work.

This book provides a great introduction to the approach and I very much enjoyed it. I found the chapters were logical and engaging. All of the core issues pertinent to the solution focused appraoch are considered, so it is well a thumb through.

Clear layout and easy to follow. Students found the use of case studies made it relevant to their studies and understanding of solution focused work.

An excellent book for the student SFT. It is very reader friendly and relevant. The exercises and personal reflections make the book very practical and an excellent resource.

This book presents a template for the use of SFBT skills - and does it very well. It uses the everyday language and experiences of practice which many will find very useful. There is no doubt that the text is furnished throughout with the authors own style, which is open and honest. The book is easy to follow, and its flow encourages the reader to journey through the process of the approach, rather than focus upon its individual specifics. It includes a realistic view of how SFBT has progressed and developed - particularly towards the possibility of accreditation - and its recognition within psychological therapies (gaining the recognition it deserves alongside other approaches). This book will be useful for existing practitioners, but also for those looking at the approach for the first time.

A specialised text that may not appeal to large numbers of undergraduate students of mental health nursing. It does provide very useful first hand insights into"managing" the therapeutic relationship.

I thought that this book was easy to read and understand and was just the right level for nursing students who may be interested in this approach and able to understand more about how this is applied in practice.
