The book is full of case studies and reflection points which deepens understanding on the subject. I would highly recommend that all healthcare professionals read this excellent and informative book.
This book aims to present the essence of palliative care for undergraduate students in nursing and allied health; my opinion was that it would not do any harm to make medical students read it as well. It covers care and compassion, the holistic approach, care planning, carers’ needs, the interprofessional team, communication, ethical issues, end of life care, death and dying and, finally, self-care. There are numerous illustrative case scenarios and lists of reflection points. Good stuff.
Comprehensive guide essential for nursing students
Extremely useful for wider reading, particularly relevant for students chosing topics linked to palliative care for their extended project
Michelle Brown’s book ‘Palliative Care in Nursing Practice is well presented and provides a good introduction to palliative and end of life care. The content is well support by current legislation, guidelines and literature with suggested additional suggested reading for each chapter. A range of tools and models of care are discussed with consideration for application into practice. Each chapter is supported with case scenarios relating to the specific chapter content. Reflective points throughout the chapters also challenge the reader to consider aspects of care, approach, knowledge and skills.
This is a well written book which I would certainly list recommended reading for modules and courses on palliative and end of life care.
This is an excellent book for both student and qualified nurses. The focus on compassion (and self compassion) are transferrable to non-palliative patient care and therefore this book is useful for many of my modules.
