SAGE Research Methods Video and Index on Censorship magazine win awards for Publication Excellence

July 18, 2017

SAGE Publishing is proud to announce that SAGE Research Methods Video received an Award of Excellence and Index on Censorship magazine received a Grand Award – the top honor – from the Annual Awards for Publication Excellence (APEX Awards).  SAGE Research Methods Video is a collection of nearly 500 streaming videos launched in 2016 designed to teach students and researchers the research process. Index on Censorship is a magazine devoted to protecting and promoting free expression. Its 250th anniversary issue was honored by the award.

SAGE Research Methods Video contains more than 125 hours of video: tutorials, case study videos, expert interviews, and more, covering the entire research methods and statistics curriculum. As world-leading publisher in these areas with 50 years’ experience producing high quality pedagogical materials, SAGE brought together the fields’ leading figures and its own bestselling authors to produce the collection.

“We are thrilled to win the APEX award for publication excellence for our innovative new research methods video collection, which brings together our publishing expertise in research methods and our market focused product innovation,” said Karen Phillips, SAGE Publishing’s Senior Vice President of Global Learning Resources and UK Editorial. “The collection has been incredibly well received by the market and the APEX award is a very welcome recognition of the quality and innovation of our methods video publishing.”

This is the second APEX Award bestowed on SAGE’s pedagogical video collections, which are used by library customers, students, and faculty who teach research methods and researchers around the world. SAGE Video, which now contains eight subject collections spanning the social sciences, received the APEX Award of Excellence in 2016. The awards demonstrate SAGE’s success in meeting the growing demand for pedagogical video in Higher Education. Dedicated to further enhancing research skillsets among students and researchers, a new collection titled Practical Research and Academic Skills will be released in January 2018.

Of the 1,361 products nominated in the 2017 APEX Awards competition, only 100 received a Grand Award. Titled Danger in Truth: Truth in Danger, the 250th anniversary issue of Index on Censorship focuses on the increasing threats – such as physical violence, kidnapping, and more – that journalists are facing on a global scale.

“We are very excited to hear about our APEX award, which acknowledges the hard work, and high level of journalism here at Index on Censorship magazine,” said Rachael Jolly, Editor of Index on Censorship. “This quarterly global magazine has been covering threats to journalists in Syria, Yemen and Chechnya in the recent months, as well as how China is locking down access to information, and why US theatre companies are afraid to produce controversial plays. There are enormous threats to freedom of expression across the world in 2017, and hopefully this award will help us bring knowledge of this to a wider audience.”

Founded in 1972, Index on Censorship reports on free expression violations around the world, publishes banned writing, and explores free expression issues through original and challenging commentary and analysis. Publishing an interview with Margaret Atwood in its latest issue, the magazine often features insights from world-renowned authors.

The APEX Awards recognize outstanding quality in publishing by professional communicators across a broad range of categories including: graphic design, editorial content, and overall success. 2017 marks the competition’s 29th year.
