The Social Thought of Karl Marx

Other Titles in:
Social Theory

August 2014 | 288 pages | SAGE Publications, Inc

Part of the SAGE Social Thinkers series, this brief and clearly-written book provides a concise introduction to the work, life, and influences of Karl Marx, one of the most revered, reviled, and misunderstood figures in modern history. The book serves as an excellent introduction to the full range of Marx’s major themes—alienation, economics, social class, capitalism, communism, materialism, environmental sustainability—and considers the extent to which they are relevant today. It is ideal for use as a self-contained volume or in conjunction with other sociological theory textbooks.

1. The World of Karl Marx

2. Marx's Materialism

3. Alienation

4. Class

9. Capitalism and the Environment

10. Further Readings

I found this book to a very good source for students who are experiencing Sociology at a higher level. It provides them with knowledge and understanding of marxist thought and moves them away from the basics.

Excellent overview to the holistic view of karl Marx, excellent quality for students new to Marx and also to explore with strong criticality. A highly recommended text for any sociology student.

This book provides an excellent insight into the thoughts of Marx. However, in my opinion it is more useful for the seasoned Marxist. Some prior knowledge of Marxism is necessary to get to grips with the ideologies contained in the book.

A really good overview. Will be recommending as a valuable addition to the students' general reading on Marx.

An excellent book that traces meanings and concepts that informed a generation and that still influences today.
